Budget prompts City sigh of relief after weeks of alarming leaks

The sound you could hear in the City after the Budget was not of champagne corks popping. It was more a collective sigh of relief. OK, it wasn’t great. But it could have been so much worse.

Government officials say there was an unprecedented amount of consultation with business ahead of this year’s Budget. This had the unfortunate side effect of generating a constant stream of leaks that undermined sentiment for weeks.
