The European Competition Commission has come under pressure to recruit a chief economist after being strongly criticised by a court ruling last week.

The European Court of First Instance (CFI) delivered a damning verdict, overturning the commission's blocking of the merger of Airtours, a UK package holidays operator now known as MyTravel Group, and rival First Choice.
