DWS survived an ESG crisis. Now the firm’s CEO wants to steer it towards a new era

Parachuted in after the German asset manager hit its lowest point, Stefan Hoops has resuscitated the firm’s fortunes

DWS reached a low point at the end of May 2022, when 50 law enforcement officials descended on its offices in downtown Frankfurt. 

The asset manager, majority-owned by Deutsche Bank, had been embroiled in a greenwashing scandal for much of 2021, a former employee having claimed it had overstated its ESG credentials in its annual report.
