HSBC opts for compromise candidate after shambolic search for new chair

Finding the right candidate to chair one of the world’s biggest banks is not easy. But it is not quite as hard as HSBC has made it seem.

When Sir Mark Tucker left to join Asian insurer AIA in September, the board had not even identified a permanent replacement, let alone installed one. That was bad enough. But then the weeks went by and it became clear that the board could not agree on their preferred candidate.
