When Alastair Barbour joined the board of Liontrust in April 2011, the London-based asset manager and its chief executive John Ions were riding a wave of success.

Ions had been in the top job for a year and was about to acquire Occam Asset Management — one of eight deals he would complete over the next decade to bolster the fund manager’s distribution and broaden its investment capabilities.
