The former chair of the Competition and Markets Authority has hit out at the watchdog for its lack of boldness as it embarks on a review of how its board is performing.

The CMA was thrust into the spotlight this summer during Microsoft’s blockbuster $69bn effort to acquire games maker Activision. The CMA initially blocked what would have been the biggest deal in the sector’s history, despite a decision to clear it from the European Commission.
