Whoever wins this election, the City loses

Concern about Brexit is just one of the things denting the Square Mile’s traditional support for the Conservatives

This is not how it was supposed to go.

When UK Prime Minister Theresa May called a snap general election in April, many in the City were hopeful a larger Conservative majority would lessen her reliance on Brexit hardliners in her own party and pave the way for a softer exit from the EU. Fund managers were distinctly optimistic. Seven weeks on, the polls are closer than ever and the financial services community is sounding somewhat jaded.
